In New York City alone, upwards to 32 percent of all city residents have experienced major difficulty purchasing food as early as 2005. Their ability to buy something to eat has been seriously hampered by escalating rents, poverty, and rises in the overall cost of living. Similarly, upwards to forty percent of New York City households with children experienced difficulty affording food during the same period. This reflects an increase of 32 percent from year 2003. Sadly, 34 percent of these families were totally unable to buy food at some point. Like the rest of the country, hunger in New York City has increased and continues to do so at a steady pace. It’s victims are not only poor families dependent upon some type of public assistance, but they also include poor working and middle class households. According to the New York City Hunger Experience, November 2005 study, the number of families experiencing difficulty affording food increased in all categories, with the exception of those with incomes of $25,000 a year or less. Currently, 25 million people in the United State rely on Emergency Food Assistance Programs for food annually. In New York State the number is 2.1 million, and here in New York City the total is 1.2 million. As it stands now, hunger is quietly becoming an equal oppotuntity employer. It is attacking victims with total disregard for race or income status. However, things are not as blique as they may seem. With the help of concerned individuals, government, business, and corporations the issue of hunger can be effectively addressed. Through contributions in terms of food, money, clothing and other essential items, progress has been made in reducing the impact of hunger on its victims. However, it is a fight that requires the attention of us all. This Holiday Season and beyond, we at the Resurrection House urge you to donate to your local food pantry and soup kitchen, keeping in mind that any contribution you make will go a long way in providing food for a hungry child and his family. As little as a five, ten, or twenty dollar donation will do wonders to assist those in need. If you would like to assist us, you can do so by clicking here: If not, make it a point to give of your time or money to some other worthy charity that provides food for those without. Where and how you contribute you aid is not important.
